Serena is the regining champion of the French Open, Wimbledon and the Olympics. Although she has had a challenging year, with becoming runner up at the Australian Open and the Roland Garros earlier this year, Serena is dominating Wimbledon and no one seems to be able to stop her. She beat Elena Vesinia on Centre Court in the semi finals (ranked 7th in the World) in an astonishing time of 48 minutes by straight sets and so is on her way to the final’s of the tournament yet again. Serena Williams is just one win away from reaching Steffi Graf’s Open era best 22 grand slam titles. She is to face Angelique Kerber in the final after Kerber beat Venus on Thursday, tragically ending the dreams of a Williams vs Williams final.

The BBC spoke about the Venus and Kerber match on Thursday, dubbing Kerber ‘the Williams Slayer’. They said:

Venus, who last won the title in 2008, was appearing in her first Grand Slam semi-final since the 2010 US Open and was the oldest major semi-finalist since Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon in 1994.

Five-time champion Venus fell out of the world’s top 100 in 2011 after ebing diagnosed with immune system disorder Sjogren’s syndrome. [an auto-immune disease that causes chronic fatigue and muscle soreness].

And the eighth seed looked fatigued throughout, dropping her serve four times in the first set and also in the first game of the second.

Kerber continued to take advantage of Venus’ misfiring forehand, wrapping things up in one hour and 12 minutes to reach her first Wimbledon final.

The Guardian also spoke about Venus’ defeat saying:

The warning signs were there for Venus Williams when she dropped serve in the first game, too many loose errors and poor footwork allowing Kerber, in her second semi-final here, to get over any early nerves. Aggressive on returns, Williams hit back immediately and the first five games were breaks before Kerber, running everything down and making Williams play at least one extra ball, held and broke again to lead 5-2.

The BBC also spoke of the sporting drama between Serena and Kerber, due to Kerber beating Serena in the Australia Open final to win her first Grand Slam:

“We’ve had tough matches before and I knew she could bring it to me on this surface,” said Serena, who led Vesnina 4-0 in head-to-heads before Thursday.

“It’s never easy out there, every point you have to fight for.”

“I can’t believe I’m in the final this year. I’m 0-2 this year [Serena lost the Australian and French Open finals] so I’m determined to win one.”

“I know Venus is playing well at the moment. Everything worked and it is a very good feeling,” said Kerber, who has lost five of seven matches against Serena.

“I have a lot of experience now. I’m really enjoying my tennis life. I’m playing my best tennis. I will give everything I can in the final.”
